Why Is Straightening Teeth Recommended?

Straighter teeth tend to be more productive when it comes to chewing, biting and speaking. Additionally, a straight smile increases confidence and attractiveness. Straightening your teeth can also help prevent a wide variety of dental ailments.

Malocclusion caused by crooked teeth may lead to overbite, underbite, crossbite, and overcrowding, which hurt the performance and cosmetic appearance of the teeth.

Common implications of crooked teeth are:

Periodontitis: Periodontitis is a gum disease that begins with a bacterial infection, typically due to poor oral hygiene. Since crooked teeth are hard to clean effectively, debris, plaque and bacteria tend to commonly build up in areas that are difficult to reach. Straight teeth are more convenient to clean, which reduces the risk of gum disease.

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ): This painful condition is the result of improper jaw alignment caused by crooked teeth. This disorder results to major headaches, jaw pain, lockjaw and the grinding of teeth.

Crooked teeth often result in tooth injury or uneven usage. There is an increase in the chance of injury, since crooked teeth are weaker than straight teeth, and are misused when biting and chewing.

Ways to straighten teeth:

Orthodontic braces: Orthodontic solutions involve adjusting malocclusion, which is the misalignment of a bite or imprecise spacing between teeth. Orthodontic braces or clear aligners are the typical solutions used by orthodontists.

Customized aligning braces: Fixed braces could be placed on the front side or backside of the teeth. This solution is known to improve most types of malocclusion.
