Gum recession, also known as receding gums, is the process in which gum tissue wears away and exposes more of the tooth’s root. Gum recession may make it easier for disease-causing bacteria to build up, due to gaps that develop between the teeth and gum line.
Symptoms of gum recession:
- Sensitive teeth
- Visible roots
- Longer-looking teeth
- Tender gums
- Exposed roots
- Loose teeth
- Halitosis
- Inflammation
- Bleeding
What causes gum recession?
- Overaggressive brushing
- Poor oral hygiene
- Chewing tobacco
- Periodontal disease
How to treat Gum Recession
Prior to treating gum recession, the cause of the recession must be discovered first.
If the recession is due to excessively aggressive brushing, a softer toothbrush and a gentler brushing method should be used. If the gum recession is due to poor oral hygiene, prophylaxis may be recommended to rid the gum pockets of debris and bacteria.
In some scenarios, gum tissue regeneration and gum grafting may be recommended to reestablish natural symmetry to the gums.
